A detail from a watercolour by John Stops RWA, dated 1995

The most famous resident of the footpath leading to the property was actor Peter O’Toole, who stayed there while appearing at the Old Vic theatre.
Mr. Flowers owned The Cottage when its orchard stretched all the way up to Granby Hill. He is described in ‘Hotwells Remembered’ published in June 2003 by Hotwells Living Memories.  The Chapter on ‘local characters’ reports ……   “The land was festooned in apple, pear and plum trees and with his mates Terry Shore spent anxious hours attempting to pinch his rich supply of fruit. The thing that made the lads even more edgy when they were on one of their raids was Mr. Flowers’ secret weapon.  He would creep around his land with what the lads assumed was his withered arm permanently behind his back. His limb became a local legend as rumours of its superhuman capabilities grew into wild stories. Some even said he could throw a brick nearly a quarter of a mile.  They never found out the truth about his secret powers, but suffice to say it acted as an effective deterrent against the scrumpers of Hotwells.
However, Bristol does boast of having rather more famous residents!
